Such
folk singers begin with an alaap which is used to
elaborate the form of a melody, and then recite a couplet
called dooha which sets the tone of the song to
follow. The song itself is a veritable combination of
taans, tibais (triplets) and a variation of rhythms. A
musical concert by the Langas or the Manganiyars is a
complete experience in poetry, vocal music and expertise in
instrumental music, along with a mastery of rhythms. In such
a concert, eight to ten musicians combine to play the
kamayacha, sindhi sarangi, matka, khadtaal and morchang.
As expert singers, they take their cue from the lead singer
and follow a code that is best understood in the context of
their own community. In spite of the fact that most of them
are uneducated and unlettered, their oral tradition has a
strong following. |
